Summer is in full swing and according to the forecast, we can expect temperatures in the triple digits. For most people, that's a good reason to chill out and take it easy, but not for our recent birthday boy Nathan Jax! After completing his commitment with the Marine Corps, Jax joined CFNP last April and quickly became a mainstay in the evening classes. In addition to training on a rigorous schedule, Jax has also been planning his wedding which is coming up this Friday the 13th. Clearly not a superstitious man. So as an early wedding present, we're making him Member of the Month for July! It sure is cheaper than getting him something from the registry.
What made you try CrossFit?
I'm still at a young age and could tell I wasn't taking my health serious enough. I always worked out but only lifting weights. So I wanted to challenge myself and push myself to do something most people wouldn't do. Which also included changing my diet. I have been intermittent fasting for the last three months and love it.
My platoon commander looked like a Greek god, probably had no fat on his body, extremely fit and ate extremely healthy. While on deployment he asked what my goals were and I said I wanted to put on 15 pounds of healthy weight. At this point I had done a couple of the CrossFit workouts but never pushed myself to do them 100%. He said once a week we would work out together, boy was I in for a treat. Once a week in 110 + degree heat he took the soul out of my body. We would talk and suffer after (the suffering was coming from me not him). He even told me he hadn’t done bicep curls in years (yet he was ripped). That was the first time I really realized that CrossFit actually works. What has been your biggest accomplishment while at CFNP?
My biggest accomplishment would be that I made the gym a routine, I love going to work out and get mad at myself when I don't go when I could have. Also that I can now do ring muscle ups and handstand walks.
What's the best thing(s) about CFNP?
The best thing and CFNP is the people and environment, every time you walk In you feel welcomed and motivated to work out.
Which class time do you most commonly attend?
I started with 7:30 but now I'm more of a 5:30. But it honestly changes all the time.
Is competing one of your goals?
Competing is one of my goals. It may not be in the near future but I can definitely see myself competing. Do you have any advice for someone on the fence about trying CrossFit or joining CFNP?
Advice I would give is to just do it, don't think about it or say I'll try It in a week or a month. Just go once and try and I bet you'll get hooked like I did.
What keeps you motivated?
I get pretty competitive so when I see someone doing better than I am it pushes me to do my best. Also living a healthy life style has always been a long term goal for me. How has CrossFit changed your life?
CrossFit has changed my life in many ways, it is something that you control the outcome in. If I want to get better at ring muscle ups I need to go to the gym and practice them. If I want to get better at wall balls then I need to go to the gym and practice them. I can always chose not to go but then I wouldn't improve. If you want to get better at something, you can put your mind to it and accomplish whatever that is, not just in CrossFit, in every aspect of life.
What has been your favorite workout and why?
Murph has been my favorite workout (I hate it during it) but being a Marine and knowing it is named after a fallen navy seal just makes you realize how many people have given their lives defending our freedom, and without those people we wouldn't have the lives we do today.
What is your favorite cheat item?
Pizza is definitely my favorite cheat, a nice Detroit style square deep dish. 100% What is your favorite activity to do outside the gym?
I would say my favorite activity (I don't know if it's classified as an activity) would be listing to Joe Rogan's podcast. It’s something I do everyday and I learn something new everyday.
